How to Talk to Kids about Vaping Risks

Parents, vaping can cause both health and legal issues for our children.

Vaping or using e-cigarettes is a problem that doesn’t seem to be going away. A recent national report states that 43.6% of high school students and 17.2% of middle school students have reported using e-cigarettes to vape.
Vaping is illegal for children younger than 21. As we learn more about vaping, we understand many contain dangerous amounts of nicotine. Kids are also using these to ingest THC. Some e-cigarettes look like regular cigarettes. Some look like USB Flash drives or pens. There are larger tank systems that are easier to spot—but the ones that look like flash drives pretty much hide in plain sight.

Because of the way the technology works—vaping is largely odorless and since many of them are flavored, it could smell like fruit or candy.  But these things are addictive. The long-term effects are still largely unknown—although we do know they are causing some long-term lung issues in kids already.

Please do your own research on these products and talk to your kids about them. Talk to your kids about them.  Here are some helpful tools to help you understand more about vaping and how to talk to your kids about it.
