State Accountability System
Each year, the district and campuses are rated based upon the performance of the students on the state assessments and other factors. The ratings examine student achievement, student progress, efforts to close the achievement gap and post-secondary readiness. The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB) (Public Law 107-110) mandates accountability measures that apply to the state, each district, and each campus. All public school districts, campuses, and the state are evaluated annually for Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP). All students in grades 3-8 and 10 must be tested in reading and math and all results must be included in the AYP calculation.
The tests used are STAAR, STAAR-Accommodated, STAAR-Alternate 2, Texas English Language Proficiency Assessment System (TELPAS), and Linguistically Accommodated Testing (LAT). All students, African Americans, Hispanics, White, Economically Disadvantaged, Special Education, and Limited English Proficient studets must meet the same performance and participation standards. Other measures used in determining Adequate Yearly Progress are graduation rate and attendance rate.
