Entire FAQ: MWISD End of Year Plan for Parents and Students

Why is Mineral Wells ISD Closing Due to Coronavirus Concerns?
Governor Greg Abbott, on April 17, ordered that all Texas schools remain closed through the end of the 2019-20 school year. As such, MWISD facilities will remain closed through May and all District events and activities will be canceled during that time. MWISD Distance Learning will continue through the official end of the District's school year – May 27, 2020. 
Will At-Home Learning Continue During this Time?
Yes. At-Home Learning will continue through the end of the school year. Teachers have communicated with parents and students about the continuation of At-Home Learning. Parents who have questions can contact [email protected]
Will MWISD Students be Required to Take Final Exams this Year?
Students will not be taking final exams. Class grades will be determined by student work completed during the six weeks.
Will Meals be Available for Students who Need Them? 
Mineral Wells ISD will continue to distribute free curbside meals to all MWISD students, Monday-Friday during the closure.  Meals are offered weekdays from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. through the Travis Elementary School traffic lane. Parents who live in the city can drive through and pick up lunch and breakfast meals for each child ages 0-18 at home. Children are not required to be present in the vehicle.
When arriving to receive meals, parents and students should remain in their vehicles as a precautionary health measure. Meals will be delivered to each vehicle.  Meal distribution is scheduled to continue through May 27, the final day of the 2019-20 school year. MWISD will be sharing information about summer meal distribution in the coming weeks.  Those who live outside the city limits and lack transportation to go to the school can fill out a delivery request form through the district. 
MWISD Summer Feeding Program-MWISD and the district Food Service Department are committed to our students and making sure they have healthy meals during these times of distance learning. We will continue our drive by grab and go breakfast and lunch service thru June. We will know more in June about July meal service and how it will be provided so look for a statement nearer to that time.  

When Will I Be Able to Pick up My Child’s Belongings?
Locker items, medications, and nap mats may be picked up at the following times and locations:
*Lamar, Houston, Travis- June 4th from 2-6 pm in the front drive
*Junior High- June 3rd from 2-6 pm in the front drive
*High School and Mineral Wells Academy will be by appointment. Please email [email protected] (High School principal) or [email protected] (Academy principal) to arrange a date and time
*Medication pick-up for these campuses will be on June 2nd from 2-6 pm
*Items that aren’t picked up will be donated to charity or recycled if arrangements aren’t made with the campus administration
When Will Students Return their Athletic Gear, Band Instruments, Choir Uniforms, Etc. and Pick up their Personal Equipment/Belongings that were Left in those Areas? 
Please contact your child’s coach/sponsor to schedule a time for your child to retrieve their belongings and to turn in equipment. If you have any additional questions about athletic or fine arts gear, please email athletic director Gerald Perry at [email protected] or band director Elton Ball at [email protected] Junior high students may retrieve items left in athletic lockers on June 3rd from 2-6pm in the front of the building.
When Will I Turn in my Child’s Chromebook, Hot Spot, Library Books, or Remaining Learning Packets?
MWISD Distance Learning will continue through the official end of the District's school year – May 27, 2020.  MWISD plans to collect all school property during the week of June 1-5. This will include library books, Chromebooks, and hot spots that were checked out. 
Lamar/Houston- Library books and any remaining packets can be returned to labeled bins in the front drive the week of June 1-5.
Travis- June 4th from 2-6 pm in the front drive
Junior High- June 3rd from 2-6 pm in the front drive
High School (non-seniors)- June 2nd from 2-6 pm (Medication pick-up for high school students will occur at this time as well)
NOTE: Students with Incompletes will need to keep their Chromebooks for use during summer school.
MWHS Seniors will turn in Chromebooks, hot spots, library books, equipment, and clear all fines on the following dates and times (please choose the date/time that is most convenient): 
May 17 5:00-7:00 PM
May 18 9:00-12:00 Noon
May 19 2:00-6:00 PM

In order to participate in any of the graduation exercises and receive their graduation packet (diploma, shot records, ribbons, and transcript) seniors must be cleared of all fines and missing items. 
My Child Participated in a Fundraiser.  When will the Orders be Distributed?
  • Lamar Big Kahuna items will be available for front drive pickup May 5th from 11-1 pm. Big Kahuna coordinators will contact parents with more information.  Any prizes awarded to the students for their sales will be picked up at the time of delivery or honored during the 2020-21 school year. 
  • Travis Elementary fundraisers will be delivered to your home for a “contact-free” delivery.  You will be contacted by the fundraising sponsors during the next few weeks to have your time scheduled.  
  • Junior High cheerleading fundraiser - Cheer sponsor will notify cheer parents regarding fundraiser specifics.
The Camp Grady Spruce Trip was Canceled.  When Will I Receive my Refund?
In light of the announcement of school being closed for the rest of the school year, Mrs. Lovern will begin the process of issuing the remainder of all refunds for Camp Grady Spruce 2020. Please realize that this process will take some time, and Mrs. Lovern will get your refunds to you as soon as she can. If you have any questions, please email [email protected]
Will my Child Receive their Yearbook?
When the High School campus receives their shipment of 2019-20 yearbooks, they will offer curbside distribution of purchased yearbooks.  Additional yearbooks will be available for purchase while supplies last.
Travis Elementary and Mineral Wells Junior High will distribute their yearbooks next school year. Please note that Lamar Elementary and Houston Elementary do not participate in yearbook sales. 
When will I Receive my Child's MWJH Spring Photographs?

MWJH Spring pictures - Inter-State Studio suspended shipments until further notice. Photos will be shipped when their business resumes. If parents are needing their pictures immediately, the company offers a direct image program. This program will allow the business to email the images directly to the parent. Unfortunately, this program will require parents to print the pictures. 

Will MWHS Prom be Made Up?
Because Mineral Wells High School’s scheduled prom is during the District's COVID-19 closure, this event will not take place. 
Will MWISD’s Closure Impact Graduation?
MWISD is committed to celebrating our graduates and everything they have accomplished in a special way while respecting the health and safety recommendations of state, county, and local officials. As such, graduation will look different this year.
*During the week of May 11-18, between noon and 7:00 pm, each senior and up to six family members will have a scheduled time to report to MWHS. Each senior will have a cap and gown picture taken. Re-schedules will take place on the same date between 7:00 pm and 9:00 pm.
*Video will be recorded of each student taking the traditional walk across the stage to receive their diploma. Those individual videos will be edited together into a full graduation ceremony, which will also include:
     -Pomp and Circumstance (senior pictures)
     -Speakers (recorded May 18-22)
     -Certification of Graduates
     -Presentation of Diplomas (video)
     -Alma Mater
     -Ram Elite Society recognition
     -Hat Toss (mash up video)
*The video will be made available to the public
When will MWHS Announce the Ram Elite Recipients?
The 2020 Ram Elite recipients will be recognized during the MWHS graduation ceremony.
Will we be Able to Request Transcripts During This Closure? 
All transcript requests will continue to be processed. 2020 seniors will receive their final transcript on Friday, May 29th when they pick up their graduation packet. Times will be determined. For additional transcript requests please email Kelly Simonton at [email protected]
Will Athletic and Fine Arts Competitions Still be Held?
No. The UIL has stated that no competitions, practices, rehearsals, or workouts will take place during the COVID-19 closure, and with Governor Abbott's announcement that schools will be closed for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year, all remaining UIL activities are also canceled. The UIL's previously communicated information allowing remote instruction remains in place.
Will the Athletic Department Still Offer Summer Camps & Summer Workouts?
Mineral Wells ISD is still waiting on the UIL to make a final decision about summer sports activities/workouts.  At this time, all summer youth sports camps will be rescheduled for July. The High School and Junior High Strength and Conditioning program is still scheduled to begin in June pending UIL guidelines. 
Will the Athletic Department Still Offer the Physical Day for Athletes?
We always strive to provide students with the best opportunities and services to participate in athletics at Mineral Wells ISD. However, under the current circumstances, we cannot guarantee families that we can provide UIL mandated athletic physicals for incoming 7th, 9th and 11th grade athletes at this time. Currently, we are working with our team orthopedic, Dr. Boothby, on scheduling a date in July. However, we cannot confirm a date or this service until governing boards allow gatherings to normalize. Momentarily, we are asking that you seek athletic physicals from your primary care physician. We will work to provide athletic physicals to you once again as soon as we are allowed. We are also asking that you still complete your paperwork on RankOneSport.com. The physical form needed for the doctor can be located and downloaded from the MWISD website under the Athletic page as well as directions for RankOne that all athletes must complete prior to August. Will Student-Athletes that Should Have Sized for Letterman Jackets in the Spring Still Have That Opportunity?
Senior athletes that were unable to size for their jackets this spring, will have that opportunity during the summer. Those seniors will be contacted once the company is able to resume sizing and production. Seniors from other high school organizations will be contacted by their coach or sponsor. All others will size in the fall. 
Will AP Testing be Impacted by MWISD’s Closure?
Yes. To support students in continuing their AP journey, the College Board is offering optional free, online AP classes and take-at-home AP Exams. These AP exams will now be taken a week later than originally scheduled. These exams will be administered during the weeks of May 11-22 and taken at home.  Students must have already registered for AP testing.  Mineral Wells ISD and the College Board understand that this new format may not be optimal for some students and therefore your student may decide to opt-out of taking some or all their AP exams. Any student who does not take their exam will be issued a refund. These refunds will come in the form of a district-issued check, mailed to your home address on record, after the exam window is complete. If a student clicks on any AP exam link sent to them for testing, this will start the exam session and void any possibility for a refund. The MWHS Campus Testing Coordinator and AP teachers will continue to provide more details as the College Board makes them available.
How will the Closure Impact the STAAR Test?
Governor Greg Abbott announced that he has waived the State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness (STAAR) testing requirements for the 2019-20 school year. The Texas Education Agency (TEA) plans to develop additional methods to ensure that students are learning and ready to succeed at the next grade level. These discussions are ongoing, and the state will provide more information as it develops.
How will the Closure Affect SAT or ACT Testing?
SAT and ACT exams have been canceled and refunds will be issued to students. The College Board will be announcing the status of future SAT/ACT testing in the coming weeks and will also be providing information about additional test dates. Free online practice tests and personalized learning tools are available for students online on the College Board website. The College Board is encouraging students to prepare for future SAT/ACT testing opportunities through the online platform at Khan Academy. The College Board will be unable to provide additional opportunities for students to take the SAT during the current school year. The College Board is working to provide additional opportunities for students to take the SAT/ACT when the situation allows.
When will Report Cards Go Home?
Report cards are currently available in Skyward.  Final report cards will be mailed at the end of the school year. 
When is Pre-Kindergarten/Kindergarten Registration?  
Lamar Elementary is in the process of preparing for an online Pre-K/Kindergarten registration to open on May 18th. Please watch the Lamar Facebook page and MWISD website for information on what you will need to complete enrollment. For information about registration, please contact: [email protected]
What about Registration for all Other Students for Next Year?
Registration for the 2020-2021 school year will open later in the summer for all returning students. This online process will be conducted in the same manner as the last several years. Students new to MWISD will also complete new student registration online. Please watch the MWISD webpage for additional details. 
My Child Received an “I” on his/her Report Card. What Does this Mean?   
Students receiving an I (Incomplete) have assignments that were not turned in and/or have not communicated with their teachers. Students will be required to complete these assignments.  They will have until the end of summer school to finish and submit their work. Students receiving an Incomplete will be allowed to retain their Chromebook until the end of summer school.  Graduating Seniors will need to have all incompletes resolved by May 15, 2020 in order to participate in graduation exercises.
Will There be Summer School this Year?  
Yes. It is anticipated that summer school will be online or facilitated through the use of paper packets. The dates and times for summer school are:
*Travis Elementary and MWJH summer school will be June 8th - 19th, 8:00 am - 12:00 pm.
*MWHS summer School will be June 2-24, 8:00-11:30 or 12:00-3:30
*Lamar ESL/Bilingual summer school is being determined based on TEA guidance. Updated information will be added to the district/campus website and social media. 
*All Chromebooks used for summer school will be turned in on June 29th at the District Services Complex, 906 SW 5th Avenue, from 2:00 - 6:00 pm.
