Back Pack Buddies recognized as Partner in Education by the MWISD Board of Trustees

Most school kids anxiously await the Friday dismissal bell, signaling the beginning of the weekend.   But for many, instead of two days of fun the bell signals two days without enough to eat.

Backpack Buddies of Mineral Wells has changed that scenario for many of our students at Mineral Wells ISD.   Sponsored by the First United Methodist Church of Mineral Wells, the Backpack Buddies program sends eligible students home on Fridays with backpacks filled with food to help them over the weekend hump.

The backpacks are filled with kid-friendly, easily prepared foods such as fruit cups, granola bars, juice, cereal, and many other items.

The importance of Backpack Buddies is based on educational research that shows students who eat consistent, healthy meals have a better opportunity to reach their full academic potential. They are able to better concentrate and bond more closely with peers.

But the bottom line is always that kids should never be hungry.  So, Every Friday afternoon, just a few minutes before the final bell rings, 200 eager students will receive a bag full of goodies to take home for the weekend.

The scale of hunger in this world is so hard to fathom.  The response from these volunteers speaks volumes about what it means to our students and their families when they help them combat food insecurities in our community.

Mineral Wells ISD thanks Backpack Buddies of Mineral Wells for their willingness to work with our schools to enrich the lives of our students and our community.
