What are speech and language disorders?
Speech and language disorders affect one's ability to talk, understand, read, and write. Such disorders have different causes, and may range from a few speech sound errors or repetitions of sounds or words to a total loss of the ability to use speech to communicate effectively.
What is a speech disorder?
A speech disorder is an impairment of the articulation of speech sounds, fluency, and/or voice.
What is a language disorder?
A language disorder is impaired comprehension and/or use of spoken, written, and/or other symbol systems. The disorder may involve 1)the form of language, 2) the content of the language,3)the function of language in communication in any combination.
How can a speech-language pathologist help persons with speech and language disorders?
After a comprehensive evaluation, speech-language pathologist select intervention approaches based on the highest quality of scientific evidence available. The clinician then integrates a students' communication goals with academic and social goals, and provide services through individual or group sessions, in classrooms or in collaboration with teachers, or through consultation with teachers and parents.
