Pre-K for All

Mineral Wells ISD - Universal Prekindergarten Program

In 2015, Mineral Wells ISD expanded its high-quality early education program for the whole community.  ALL children in our community (of the age of 4 on or before September 1 of the current school year), will be able to attend prekindergarten and receive a head start on a lifetime of learning.

Mineral Wells ISD believes early childhood education is important for a child’s development, school readiness, and academic success.  Access to a strong education for every child beginning in the first few years of life is an important foundation to their education.  Studies have proven that children who have rich early learning experiences are better prepared to thrive in kindergarten and beyond.

Educators also know that pre-K is the foundation for learning basic skills such as the alphabet, colors, and early literacy. Children learn to adapt to structured schedules, which will help them develop social skills. Lessons learned in pre-K prepare students for literacy in kindergarten when children start learning how to read.

Currently, under the state’s rules, districts are required to serve students who qualify for the program before it opens spots up to others. Students who qualify include English language learners, homeless children, and children in special education or in the free and reduced lunch program. Children of military families also qualify.

By providing high-quality preschool for every child, MWISD will give our kids a safe place to learn and the start they need to succeed in school.  All children, regardless of family income, deserve an equal chance to succeed in school and in life. High-quality, pre-k gives them that opportunity.

The parents/guardians of the student must be residents of Mineral Wells ISD and qualify due to the financial situation of the family,  or if a language other than English is the primary language of the family.

2022-2023 Pre-Kindergarten Registration Requirements
In order to register your child for Pre-Kindergarten for the 2023-2024 school year:

  • Your child must be 4 years old on or before September 1, 2023.
  • Proof of Income (for example, most recent pay stub, food stamps that include a letter with number, or SSI deposit proof)
  • You must provide an original copy of the child’s birth certificate.
  • A copy of the child’s social security card is requested.
  • You must provide proof of residence (something showing current service into the home with the parent’s name) such as a utility bill. A lease agreement or closing document is acceptable, provided the document includes the name of the person who is enrolling the child.
  • The parent or guardian must present identification (driver’s license).
  • You must provide a copy of the child’s immunizations*.

*A student must be fully immunized against certain diseases or must present a certificate or statement that, for medical reasons or reasons of conscience, including a religious belief, the student will not be immunized.

For exemptions based on reasons of conscience, only official forms issued by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS), Immunization Branch, can be honored by the District. This form may be obtained by writing the:

DSHS Immunization Branch (MC 1946), P.O. Box 149347, Austin, Texas 78714-9347; or online at the Texas Department of State Health Services.  If the parent is seeking an exemption for more than one student in the family, a separate form must be provided for each student.

The immunizations required are: diphtheria, rubeola (measles), rubella (German measles), mumps, tetanus,
pertussis, poliomyelitis (polio), hepatitis A, hepatitis B, and varicella (chicken pox). The school nurse can
provide information on age-appropriate doses or on an acceptable physician-validated history of illness required by the Department of State Health Services. Proof of immunization may be established by personal records from a licensed physician or public health clinic with a signature or rubber-stamp validation.

If a student should not be immunized for medical reasons, the student or parent must present a certificate signed by a U.S. licensed physician stating that, in the doctor’s opinion, the immunization required poses a significant risk to the health and well-being of the student or member of the student’s family or household.  This certificate must be renewed yearly unless the physician specifies a life-long condition.
