July 20, 2006 - MWISD Board Meeting - Sammy Martin, Buford-Thompson vice-president, distributed preliminary budget figures to the Board on the multi-purpose complex. Mike King, Huckabee & Associates architect, informed the board members that these are just preliminary figures from the plans to be shown tonight. It was reported that they are estimating a little high and as the plans are developed the costs will get more in line. He briefly reviewed the plans with the board members and audience.


September 12, 2006 - MWISD Board of Trustees held a board workshop in the District Services Complex boardroom at 5:00 p.m. to discuss the new multi-purpose complex and architectural plans.


October 10, 2006 - MWISD Board Meeting - Charles Shewmake, facilities manager, gave a brief update on the construction projects. Mr. Shewmake reported that the preliminary tasks have been completed for the multi-purpose complex. In addition, they recently received permission from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department on the tennis courts and demolishment of the old park restrooms. The architects completed the plans on October 4, and the construction managers have sent out 50 sets of plans to different vendors and bidders, in order for them to get their bids ready. A set of plans was also provided to the City of Mineral Wells to get their approval. The groundbreaking ceremony for the multi-purpose complex will be scheduled at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 8. In addition, the preliminary drawings have begun on the junior high project, and the project will go out for bid in early to mid-December. The junior high construction would start after the first of the year. Both projects, he stated should be completed by October 4, 2007.


November 7, 2006 - MWISD Board of Trustees held a board workshop/special called meeting at 4:00 p.m. to discuss the multi-purpose complex and consider the guaranteed maximum price.


November 8, 2006 - Groundbreaking ceremonies for the new multi-purpose complex was held at 2:00 p.m. on the west side of the high school.


December 12, 2006 - Announced that the multi-purpose complex construction project has started, and the dirt work is being done now. Mentioned that Buford-Thompson Company would soon be doing monthly updates on the construction project with the district. In addition, it was reported that the company would be going out for bids in January on the junior high construction project.


January 9, 2007 - Sammy Martin, Buford-Thompson vice-president, updated the MWISD Board of Trustees on the multi-purpose construction project at high school.

January 25, 2007 - MWISD Board of Trustees approved the guaranteed maximum price for the construction of the junior high project.

February 13, 2007 -
Sammy Martin, Buford-Thompson Company vice-president, and Mike Trammell, project manager, updated the Board and audience on the multi-purpose complex and junior high project. Mr. Martin reported that they are currently 2½ weeks behind due to the weather conditions. They announced that building pads have been cut to grade, the detention ponds are being cut, lime stabilization is in progress at the new tennis courts, utility work is 80% complete until the foundation is going, and the storm drainage will be installed under the bleachers after the pier drilling is complete. Pier drilling began today at the press box and the retaining wall north of the existing tennis courts is complete. The retaining wall south of the new tennis courts is in progress. It was reported that the concrete grade beams and slab for the press box will follow the pier drilling operations, plumbing, mechanical, and electrical trades will mobilize within the next two weeks and begin building rough-ins, and concrete for the new tennis courts will begin within the next two weeks. Mr. Trammell announced that the fencing is up at the junior high; utilities have been researched, got the dirt cut off, trying to get building pad close to grade, working with sub on metal building, and plan to do piers at the junior high when finished at the stadium.

March 22, 2007 - Sammy Martin, Buford-Thompson Company vice-president, updated the board on the building projects. Mr. Martin reported to the Board that the construction project at the multi-purpose stadium is approximately 2½ weeks behind, due to rain. Mike Trammell, project manager, reported that the storm drainage under the bleachers will be installed after the pier drilling is complete and areas become available, 95% of the earthwork operations are complete – all major cuts and fills around the site have been completed, 70% of lime stabilization is complete, mechanical and electrical rough-in has begun, 60% of pier drilling is complete – home side building foundation piers are complete and the field house piers are 70% complete, press box grade beams are complete – setting up a slab is in progress, 40% of retaining wall at the north end of the football field is complete, 70% of the paving is complete – parking lot south of the football field is complete and the fire lane west of the press box is complete. In addition, Mr. Trammell reported that the drive approach at Ram Drive will be poured by the end of next week, three new tennis courts will be poured and finished next week, the slab for press box ground level will be poured within the next two weeks, grade beams for the field house will begin within a week, and structural steel erection at the press box will begin within the next two to three weeks. Mr. Martin reported that the junior high project is on schedule because the site is entirely different than the other project. Mr. Trammell reported that 95% of the earthwork operations are complete, 90% of the utility work is complete, piers for the building foundation are complete, grade beams for the building foundation have begun, and electrical rough-in for the new building has begun. In addition, Mr. Trammell reported that plumbing rough-in for the slab will begin within the next two weeks, and the slab is scheduled to be poured at the end of April.

April 10, 2007 - Sammy Martin, Buford-Thompson Company vice-president, updated the board on the building projects. Mr. Martin reported to the Board that the construction project at the multi-purpose stadium is approximately 2 weeks behind, due to the weather. Mike Trammell, project manager, reported that the pier drilling is approximately 75% complete. Mr. Trammell reported that the home side, field house, press box, visitor side, and southwest concession building piers are complete. He announced that the retaining wall at the north end of the football field is 70% complete and the structural steel is being delivered and the erection is scheduled to begin on April 23. In addition, Mr. Trammell reported that three tennis courts have been poured and black fencing is in progress, as well as the mechanical and electrical rough-in at the press box. Mr. Trammell stated that the slab for the press box ground level will be poured within the next two weeks, masonry samples and submittal have been approved and the work is scheduled to begin within the next month, and the single tennis court is scheduled to be poured next week. Mr. Martin reported that the junior high project is a little behind schedule. Mr. Trammell reported that 90% of the utility work is complete. He mentioned that they are holding for gas line relocation by TX Gas. He reported that the grade beams for the building foundation are 30% complete, waiting on an easement from TXU for permanent power, and metal building shop drawings are being reviewed by the structural engineers. In addition, the plumbing and electrical rough-in for the slab will begin next week and the slab is scheduled to be poured at the end of April.

May 8, 2007 - Sammy Martin, Buford-Thompson Company vice-president, updated the board on the building projects. Mr. Martin reported to the Board that the construction project at the multi-purpose stadium is approximately three weeks behind, due to the rainy weather. Mike Trammell, project manager, reported that the pier drilling for all the buildings are complete except for the bell piers that are associated with the bleachers. In addition, Mr. Trammell stated that the retaining wall at the north end of the football field is 90% complete, ground level slab for press box has been poured, grade beams for the field house are in progress, grade beams in progress at the northwest concession building, structural steel erection is in progress at the press box, tennis courts have all been poured and fencing is 98% complete, and underground mechanical and electrical rough-in is in progress at the field house. He reported that the tennis courts are scheduled to be completed within the next month, lime stabilization north of the field house will be completed, demolition of the road will begin the first week of June, and the upper floors at the press box will be poured within the next month. Mr. Martin reported that the construction project at the junior high is only one week behind, due to the weather. Mr. Trammell reported that the utility work is complete, gas line relocation has been completed by TX gas, grade beams for the building foundation are complete, and plumbing and electrical underground rough-in is complete. He stated that the slab is scheduled to be poured by the end of May and the metal building is scheduled to be delivered the week of June 4.

June 19, 2007 - Superintendent Crass reported that at 5:00 p.m. the Board toured the construction sites at the high school and at the junior high prior to the regular board meeting. Mr. Crass announced that the contractor and architect were at the sites to discuss the projects and answer any questions of the board members. He stated that the contractors had reported at the last board meeting that the projects were behind schedule anywhere from 35 days on the Ram Stadium to 20 days on the junior high addition, which has now changed. He announced that board members will be brought more up-to-date at the next regular meeting.

July 17, 2007 - Sammy Martin, Buford-Thompson Company vice-president, and Mike Trammell, project manager, updated the Board on the construction projects at Ram Stadium and Mineral Wells Junior High School. Mr. Martin announced that they would be asking for additional days on the stadium for June, due to the rain. Mike Trammell reported the following: all concrete at the press box has been completed, belled piers for the bleachers on the visitor’s side are approximately 50% complete and will be completed this week, northwest concession building slab has been poured and the masonry has begun, southeast concession building slab is being prepared and will be poured on Friday, July 20, southwest concession building underground plumbing and electrical is being roughed-in and the slab will be poured next week, lime stabilization of the drive north of the field house is in progress and will be completed this week, masonry is in progress at the press box, elevator shaft is complete and the exterior walls are being started, tennis court surfacing is in progress at the four new courts and the four old courts, Musco Lights for the football field have been installed, exterior drywall framing at the press box is approximately 30% complete, and plumbing and electrical wall rough-in is in progress at the press box. Mr. Trammell announced that they are looking ahead to the following: concrete paving at the north side of the field house will be completed before the start of school, lime stabilization of the football field will start next week, drainage piping for the turf will begin after completion of the lime stabilization, and bleacher erection will begin next week as the bell piers are complete. Sammy Martin announced that they would also be asking for additional days in June for the junior high project, due to rain. Mr. Martin stated that their primary goal right now is to have the eight classrooms finished by the start of school. Mike Trammell reported the following: building slab has been completed, metal building erection is in progress and framing will be completed this week, exterior concrete masonry unit walls are in progress, and plumbing and electrical wall rough-in for the concrete is in progress. Mr. Trammell reported that they are looking ahead to the following: exterior concrete masonry unit walls will be completed in approximately two weeks, metal roof panels will be installed following the completion of the exterior concrete masonry, and interior drywall framing will begin in approximately two weeks.

August 14, 2007 - Sammy Martin, Buford-Thompson Company vice-president, Mike Trammell, project manager, and Mike King, Huckabee & Associates architect, updated the Board on the construction projects at Ram Stadium and Mineral Wells Junior High School. At the stadium, the belled piers for the bleachers are complete, slabs for all four concessions buildings are complete, concrete north of the field house and the road at the southwest corner of the high school is complete, exterior walls on three of the concessions buildings are complete and the fourth concession buidling is in progress, tennis court surfacing is complete, and exterior drywall framing at the press box is complete. In addition, glass for the press box has been measured for size verification and the glass has been ordered, plumbing and electrical wall rough-in is in progress at the press box and the concession buildings, field house underground plumbing and electrical rough-in is in progress, bleachers are in progress on the visitors' side, lime stabilization and final grading of the football field is complete, visitor side perimeter concrete sidewalks for anchoring of turf is complete, and fabrication of roof trusees for concession buildings is in progress. Looking ahead, the drainage piping for the turf will begin in approximately one week, bleacher material for the home side will be delivered this week, scaffold system for the front of the press box will begin this week - this scaffold will be in place for glass and exterior metal panels, roofing on the press box will begin in approximately two weeks, slab for the field house will be completed in approximately three weeks, and installation of trusses for the concession buildings will begin in approximately one week. At the junior high project, the structural steel for the metal building is complete, installation of metal roof panels is 75% complete, exterior CMU walls are complete, interior CMU walls are in progress, plumbing and electrical wall rough-in for the CMU is in progress, installation of fire sprinkler piping and HVAC ductwork is in progress, and interior drywall framing is in progress. Looking ahead, the exterior split face block will begin this week, sheet rocking of interior walls will begin this week, and final grading and installation of exterior mechanical units will begin in approximately one week.

August 28, 2007 - Sammy Martin, Buford-Thompson Company vice-president, and Mike Trammell, project manager, updated the Board on the construction projects at Ram Stadium and Mineral Wells Junior High School. Mr. Martin announced that they have been able to pick up time, since the weather has been working with them. Mike Trammell reported the following: half of the field house slab has been poured, masonry on the press box is 98% complete, masonry screen walls at the visitor side bleachers are in progress, tennis courts are complete and have been turned over to the district, bleachers are 75% complete on the visitors’ side and the home side material has been delivered, drainage piping for turf is in progress at the east side of the field and the gravel material is being delivered, plumbing and electrical wall rough-in is in progress at the press box and the concession buildings, field house underground plumbing and electrical rough-in is complete, erection of roof trusses for the concession buildings are 60% complete, roofing for the press box has begun, installation of the elevator has begun, fire sprinkler piping at the press box is complete, the keystone retaining wall is complete on the visitor side, and the transformer has been set and the main switchgear has been set in position at the press box – power to be turned on in two weeks. Mr. Trammell announced that they are looking ahead as follows: the remainder of the field house slab will be poured this Friday, masonry on the field house will begin next week, the press box roof will be dried in this week, and the sidewalk grading will begin next week. Sammy Martin stated that their primary goal right now is to have the eight classrooms at the junior high ready by September 11. Mike Trammell reported the following: installation of metal roof panels are 95% complete, interior CMU walls are 80% complete, plumbing and electrical wall and ceiling rough-in is in progress, installation of fire sprinkler piping is complete, HVAC ductwork is in progress throughout the building, interior drywall framing is 90% complete and the classroom area is complete, exterior split face block is 50% complete and the classroom area is complete, sheet rocking of interior walls in the classroom area is complete, windows are being installed, sidewalks and mechanical equipment pads are complete on the north and east sides of the building and tape, bed, texture, and paint is in progress in the classroom area. Mr. Trammell reported that they are looking ahead to the following: the floor is scheduled to begin next week, the hollow metal doors are scheduled to be installed next week, mechanical equipment start up to begin next week, ceiling grid will begin this week, and the parking lot will begin as the exterior masonry is completed.

September 10, 2007 - Sammy Martin, Buford-Thompson Company vice-president, announced that he is a little short handed tonight. His detail man was unable to attend this meeting. Mr. Martin reported the following: the field house slab has been completed, masonry on the press box is complete, masonry screen walls at the visitor side and home side bleachers are in progress, bleachers are 85% complete on the visitors’ side, drainage piping for turf is installed at the east side of the field and fine grading of the field is in progress, plumbing and electrical ceiling rough-in is in progress at the press box and the concession buildings, masonry has begun at the field house, erection of roof trusses for the concession buildings are complete, metal roof decking is in progress at the concession buildings, press box roof has been dried-in, and installation of the elevator is in progress. He reported that they are looking ahead as follows: exterior metal wall panels and the roof panels will begin within the next week, roofing at the concession buildings will begin this week, steel for the field house will begin in approximately one week, and fine grading in preparation for the concrete sidewalks will begin next week. At the junior high, he reported the following: installation of metal roof panels are complete, plumbing and electrical wall and ceiling rough-in is complete in the classroom wing, painting is complete in the classroom wing, main power has been turned on, electrical trim out is in progress, flooring has been installed in the classroom wing, and doors have been installed in the classroom wing. They are looking forward to the following: the mechanical equipment start up will begin this week, ceiling tile will begin this week, the existing parking lot repair work will be completed this week, and earthwork for the new concrete paving will begin in approximately one week.

Superintendent Crass updated the Board on the Ram Stadium scoreboard. Mr. Crass announced that he met with representatives from Olen Williams (Fair Play) that got the bid on the scoreboard and reviewed the different options available. It has been decided that the district’s logo will be placed over the area where the instant replay is normally installed. This will allow the district the ability to purchase the item later either through donations or district funds. He mentioned that there are three sponsor sign spaces at the bottom of the scoreboard that can be changed to four sponsor signs, if needed. These spaces can be rented out to businesses for a period of two years.

October 9, 2007 - Sammy Martin, Buford-Thompson Company vice-president, and Mike Trammell, project manager, updated the board on the construction projects. Mr. Martin reported that they are still showing the original schedule on the stadium. The bleachers on the visitors’ side are almost finished, field work is coming along, and glass for the press box has been delivered. Mr. Trammell reported the following: masonry is in progress, visitor side bleacher screen wall is complete, home side bleacher screen wall is 40% complete, field house exterior CMU is complete and split face CMU veneer is in progress, plumbing and mechanical interior chase walls are in progress at all concession buildings, structural steel is complete at the field house, visitor side bleachers are 90% complete, all concession buildings are dried in, drainage piping and gravel is 60% complete at the playing field, exterior wall panels at the press box are complete, frames for the press box glass are 75% installed, plumbing and electrical ceiling rough-in is in progress at the concession buildings and the field house. He reported that they are looking ahead as follows: home side bleachers will begin in approximately one week, interior walls at the field house will begin next week, turf installation will begin within the next two weeks, painting and finish out at the press box and the concession building will begin next week, and structure for the scoreboard will be installed this week. At the junior high, Mr. Trammell reported that the classroom wing is ready for furniture and miscellaneous work in preparation for occupancy by MWISD, remaining ceiling gird is being installed, painting is 95% complete in gymnasium, painting is in progress at the locker room areas, ceramic floor tile is complete in the two restroom areas, and mechanical and electrical above ceiling rough-in is 90% complete and following the ceiling grid. They are looking forward to the following: gymnasium equipment installation will begin this week, the wood flooring in the gymnasium will be delivered next week and installation will follow, lockers will be installed next week, and remaining concrete flatwork will be completed within the next two weeks.

October 23, 2007 - Sammy Martin announced that a meeting was held last Wednesday with Buford-Thompson Company, Charles Shewmake, and Mr. Scott with First Choice at the job site. At this meeting, it was stressed to find cost cutting savings that would still make the landscaping look nice. Some of the changes that they came up with were as follows: changed up the area where the scoreboard is located with rock cover, a lot less shrubs and seasonal flowers, plus removed the drip areas that might cause a maintenance problem. With all of the changes, deletes, and add-ons, they are looking at possibly a $22,000.00 credit. This would include them putting in a full coverage sprinkler system. Some of the areas that had small islands that had multiple heads were changed into a triangle, reduced the number of heads, and spaced out the heads every fifty feet. As far as the pond, they will place concrete flumes in the area; grade the area to make it look more like a pond, place erosion control materials on the sloped areas, and the rest will be hydro mulched. The high school horticulture class will be allowed to have a small area to grow seasonal plants. Sammy Martin reported that they would start out trying to get rye grass to grow and come back and shoot it with Bermuda grass. Their responsibility would be to make sure that the grass grows. He reported the following on the construction projects: glass is being installed in the press box, poured some flatwork, turf will be here the first of next week, wood flooring is being installed at the junior high, dealing with a subcontractor on partial delivery of basketball equipment, some concrete was poured, clean-up work around curbs, and plan to do some landscaping and get the grass growing.

November 13, 2007 - Sammy Martin, Buford-Thompson Company vice-president, and Mike Trammell, project manager, updated the board on the construction projects. Mr. Trammell reported the following: masonry is 95% complete, home side bleacher screen wall is complete, field house exterior masonry is 95% complete and interior CMU is 75% complete, two ticket booth buildings and the home side entry columns are in progress, visitor side bleachers are 98% complete, home side bleachers are 90% complete, painting is complete at three of the four concession buildings, ceiling grid has been installed at three of the four concession buildings, plumbing fixtures have been installed at the two home side concession buildings and installation is in progress on the visitor side, toilet partitions are being installed at the home side concession buildings, concrete sidewalls and flatwork is 80% complete around the stadium, 95% of the glass has been installed in the press box, painting is complete at the press box, ceiling grid has been installed at the press box, turf installation is 98% complete, overhead doors have been installed at all concession buildings, and roofing is complete at the press box and all four concession buildings. Mr. Trammell reported that they are looking ahead as follows: perimeter fencing around the stadium will begin this week, ceiling tile installation will begin in the press box and the concession buildings within the week, roofing at the field house will be completed within the next two-three weeks, counter tops and cabinets will be installed at the press box this week, doors at the press box will be installed next week, flooring at the press box will start next week, and topsoil will begin within the next two weeks. Mr. Martin reported that they had told the board members that the turf would be sewn together. However, it is being glued together which would give them a better product. It makes the lines look perfectly straight. In regards to the question on the ramps located on the south end of the home and visitor bleachers, they plan to meet with the architect and the bleacher manufacturer to figure it out. They must maintain certain ADA requirements on the slope of the ramps. Mr. Martin reported that we should have a temporary certificate of occupancy from the city in the morning for the new junior high building. Mr. Trammell reported that the junior high building is complete with the exception of the gymnasium. There are three remaining items to be completed as follows: gym floor striping and sealing, basketball equipment installation (six goals), and telescoping bleacher installation.

December 11, 2007 - Sammy Martin, Buford-Thompson Company vice-president, and Mike Trammell, project manager, updated the board on the construction projects. Mr. Trammell reported the following: masonry is 99% complete, miscellaneous interior and exterior masonry at the field house remains to be completed, concrete sidewalks and flatwork is 90% complete, concession buildings have been completed with the exception of sealing the floors and final cleaning, permanent fencings around the stadium is in progress, topsoil and final grading of site is in progress, lockers are being installed at the field house, interior finish out is in progress at the field house, and the scoreboard has been installed. Mr. Trammell reported that they are looking forward to the following: landscape and irrigation will begin within the next two weeks, roofing at the field house will be completed within the week, and ceiling grid will begin at the field house within the next two weeks. After a brief discussion on items to place on the punch list for the new stadium, Mr. Trammell stated that they would make the necessary adjustments. Mr. Martin reported that they plan to re-sand and surface the dead spots in the new junior high gymnasium during the holidays, as well as make sure the landscaping and a few other items are addressed as directed by the Board.

July 2, 2009
- MWISD Board of Trustees voted to retain the engineering services and bid administration of Parkhill, Smith & Cooper, Inc. for the re-roofing process.

August 25, 2009 - MWISD Board of Trustees approved the proposed bid from MUSCO Lighting for baseball, softball, soccer, and tennis (single court) lighting replacement, due to hail damage and approved a bid from Carter Construction to remove and dispose existing surface, install new CTT-200 Impermeable Track System, red spray track surfacing, and stripe the high school track.

November 2, 2009 - MWISD Board of Trustees approved the recommended ranking of six competitive sealed proposals and authorized Parkhill, Smith & Cooper, Inc. to negotiate a contract for the district roofing improvements.

November 10, 2009 - MWISD Board of Trustees voted to award the roofing improvement contract to Crawford Roofing, Inc., who was the highest ranked proposer and lowest bidder. After the contract is reviewed by the school district's attorney and both parties are satisfied, the district will proceed with the roofing improvements project.

January 4, 2010 - Crawford Roofing, Inc. starts re-roofing Mineral Wells Junior High School.

April 13, 2010 - Board members were updated on the roofing projects. MWJHS, MWHS, and District Services Complex have been torn down to the deck and replaced. The only part of the roof at the DSC that has not been replaced is Area 10 where the food service keeps their storage items. Travis Elementary was scheduled next for a complete tear off and replacement. A decision will need to be made within the next two or three weeks concerning the Houston Elementary roof, whether to cover it by replacing 15% of the deck with the money that is available or add the other $150,000.00 to tear it down to the deck and replace.

May 11, 2010 - Dr. James R. Collins, superintendent, reported that a meeting was held with the roofing company, insurance company, and architect firm. As a result of the meeting, it was determined that additional testing needed to be done to the roofs at Travis and Houston. The district is waiting on those results.

June 8, 2010 - Dr. James R. Collins, superintendent, updated the Board on the roof improvements project. The district is working with the insurance company to get the final settlement. Most of the roofing has been completed at Travis Elementary except for the skylights in the library, and the roofing company has been working at Houston Elementary since Saturday. After two years, the district is almost finished with the roofing improvements project.
